Hollywood productions and promotional tours around the world have been put on indefinite hold as actors join writers on the picket lines as they seek new contracts with studios and streaming services. Late-night talk shows and many television productions were put on long-term hiatus due to the writer’s strike. Movie tentpoles, some in mid-production, have shut down too from Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator’ sequel to Ryan Reynold‘s ‘Deadpool 3’. Studios are also pushing some of their completed films into 2024, these include ‘Dune 2’ which has been postponed from November to March 2024.
Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim postponed to 2024
Another magnum opus to shift release dates is the upcoming animated film ‘Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ which has now moved its April 2024 release date to December 2024. The move stems from a chain reaction of Warner Bros re-dating which pushed that financier and producer’s other title, ‘Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire’, to April 12, 2024.
‘Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim’ is helmed by Kenji Kamiyama, and is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original New Line Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those Peter Jackson movies, in addition to his Hobbit trilogy, always played the December year-end holiday period. The film will now face a clash with Sony’s reboot of ‘The Karate Kid’.
The War of the Rohirrim centres on the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan, a character from the appendix of JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Succession actor Brian Cox will provide the voice of the protagonist.
While some films and franchises are coming back to screens, according to reports, the MCU has confirmed that James Rhodes aka Rhodey, will be replacing Iron Man in the upcoming film Armor Wars which is slated for a 2026 release. Don Cheadle, who first played the character in 2008’s Iron Man, has been one of the constants in the film and even the latest web series ‘Secret Invasion’.
Margot Robbie was ‘almost’ cast in American Horror Story
In other news, Margot Robbie almost joined Ryan Murphy’s ‘American Horror Story’ universe, casting director Eric Dawson revealed in a podcast. He shared that the ‘Barbie’ star was almost cast on ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’. Talking about the actress, he said, “She was just such a star. It was just crazy, her star appeal and when she walked in the room and her voice. Everything about it.”
Even though Margot didn’t get the role in the second season of the hit FX anthology series, Dawson’s confident that she would become big later.
“That was one of those things as a casting director you go, ‘This is a star. What do we do with her?’ ” the Emmy-nominated casting director recalled.
